The Compressor Map feature allows the utilization of more precise flow curves obtained directly from the manufacturer. These curves provide a more accurate representation of the centrifugal compressor's performance when operating away from its design conditions. With the Compressor Map, AFT Arrow dynamically determines the closest curves to the actual operating point within the modeled system. It then performs interpolation between these curves to accurately determine the pressure ratio. This ensures that the simulation reflects the real-world behavior of the centrifugal compressor, even when it operates outside of its originally specified conditions. Figure 2: Compressor Map Menu Allowing for the Configuration of Multiple Speeds Calculate Sound Power Levels Estimate junction Sound Power Levels according to Energy Institute Guidelines. A new output parameter has been added for Sound Power Level, as calculated by the Energy Institute Guidelines for the Avoidance of Vibration Induced Fatigue Failure in Process Pipework. Sound Power Level is a function of pressure drop across inline devices, and serves as an initial calculation step to assess the presence of Acoustically Induced Vibration (AIV) issues in your system. If the calculated Sound Power Level exceeds a predefined acceptable value, a warning is issued to the user, and the Energy Institute Guideline indicates further calculation should be done to determine Likelihood of Failure (LOF). These additional calculations are possible with an AFT-supplied ancillary Excel Workbook and the Excel Export tool. Figure 3: Calculated Sound Levels Displayed With Junction Names Improved Valve Properties Window The new Valve Properties window greatly enhances clarity and usability when it comes to modeling valves. The window now clearly distinguishes between different data sources such as User Specified, Characteristic, or Handbook, making it easier to understand the available options. The form has been streamlined to focus on the most essential data, providing a clear understanding of what is required to define a valve accurately. Valve Characteristics, represented by an Open Percent vs. Flow Coefficient table, have been brought front and center. While using a Characteristic is optional, it is highly recommended as it ensures that the valve behavior aligns with real-world scenarios, particularly for valve transients. The process of selecting a pre-defined Characteristic Source has been simplified, which helps obtain more accurate values in case manufacturer data is unavailable. Figure 4: Redesigned Valve Properties window Streamlined Design Alerts The Design Alert Manager has been reorganized to improve the process of creating and applying user-defined alerts. Now, you can effortlessly create or edit a Design Alert with just a few clicks. As you modify settings, you will immediately see the criteria you are applying, ensuring a transparent experience. We have also reduced the amount of text on the form, while ensuring grammatical clarity. These improvements aim to make it easier to understand the limits being placed on the design. Figure 5: Steamlined Design Alerts Manager Other Notable Features - Custom Junction Icons - Use your own images for junction icons. Utilize any image as a junction icon, simply by right-clicking on the Toolbox icon for the junction, selecting Add Image, and browsing to the image file. This functionality enables you to use standard P&ID icons or custom images to visually represent your equipment. By using recognizable icons, you can improve the clarity and comprehension of model results, especially for those who may not be familiar with the default AFT junction icons. Figure 5: The Customize Icon window allows a custom image to be applied to any junction - Isometric Freeform Drawing Mode - Draw on the isometric grid without forcing any particular pipe routing. The Isometric drawing tools have been enhanced by adding a new Isometric Freeform drawing mode. This new drawing mode allows you to snap junction and pipe anchors to the Isometric grid, while having the flexibility to draw pipes that do not necessarily align with the isometric gridlines. This allows you to easily draw complex systems where not all piping follows a Cartesian direction. New Annotation shapes and a line tool have been introduced to allow more flexible markup such as revision numbers or change requests. Editing of Annotations has been revamped with the introduction of a live-edit Quick Access Panel, which provides immediate visual feedback of the changes you make, and simple global editing of all selected Annotations. The new Printer Page Layout tool offers a convenient and effortless way to adjust the printing area according to your preferences. Now, you can confidently print a specific section or the entire model at your desired scale, eliminating the need for trial and error. HTC's are also now separated into categories for easier selection in the GUI. These eight new correlations are identified as "Builtin" in some of the GUI lists. Many new correlation inputs have an "AUTO" option which automatically retrieves the inputs from the attached elements or other inputs. Figure 1. More HTC Correlations for Convectors Functional Mock-up Unit (FMU) Export (BETA) You can export an FMU from the GUI and use it with another program (for example, Altair Activate) that can import an FMU for solver coupling. The FMU is based on the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) version 2.0. The FMU contains the Flow Simulator model and an XML file that contains a list of input and output variables. Use the FMU to run the Flow Simulator model in steady state or transient. This feature is considered a BETA release as more testing is needed with other FMU importers. Figure 2. FMU Export Shutdown (Low Power at End of Transient) Logic (BETA) The solver has "shutdown" logic to improve convergence during the very low power (and low pressure) conditions at the end of a transient mission for a gas turbine. Shutdown logic is applied after a user-defined shutdown time. The shutdown logic converts most elements to fixed flow elements to maintain the percent core flow for each element. Chamber pressures are scaled with cycle or boundary pressures. You can also set a minimum heat transfer coefficient. Use the minimum HTC for the entire transient, if needed. This feature is considered a BETA release as more testing is needed with different shutdown cycles and Flow Simulator elements. Figure 3. Enhancements Add Resistor Area Multiplier An area multiplier option has been added to the three types of thermal resistors (conductor, convector, and radiator). The "AUTO" setting for the area multiplier automatically accounts for a tube element multiplicity factor by setting the area multiplier to the multiplicity factor on resistors that are in a series with the associated convector. For example, the area multiplier = 1.0 if the element's multiplicity factor = 1.0. The properties can be significantly different than the properties for pure NH3. A new control option is now available to limit the species considered in the CEA equilibrium calculation. If the Limit Products option is used, CEA only considers the species received (that is, NH3 remains NH3). Convectors now use a fluid temperature equivalent to a log mean temperature difference. Temperature results change if elements have large temperature increases and few stations. - Fixed Labyrinth Seal (both Vermes and Tooth-by-Tooth) land rotation effects on swirl and temperature change. Only changes result if the land (side of seal without teeth) is rotating. - Fixed Labyrinth Seal (both Vermes and Tooth-by-Tooth) temperature rise limit. The automatic temperature rise limit may have been too low for seals with many teeth (>~20). This has no affect on results for seals with moderate temperature rise. - Fixed problem with a custom heat load applied to an Advanced Tube or Incompressible Tube. Flow Simulator now writes the proper line to the *.flo file. No effect on solver results. - Multi-edit items fixed in the GUI. For instance, changing the units for many elements at once is now possible. - The Autofill option of the cavity flows tab now fills the radii column correctly for labyrinth seals and FI Cdcomp elements with an exit radius different than the inlet radius. - Fixed problem with units for tables that have more than 10 rows. - Added missing "HTC Entrance Adder" input to the Advanced Tube element. - Added some missing items from the model Import/Export file. - Added missing results display items for some elements (For example: exit Mach Number for transition elements). - Coolprop updated to the latest version (6.4.3). These controls allow the solver to continue to the next timestep, even if the controller is not converged.
