FleshEatingZipper
‘The Wolverine’ Review: The Bar Has Been Raised Thirteen years ago, director Bryan Singer brought the X-Men to the big screen, and in the span of two movies, he helped to wipe away the stigma that hack filmmaker Joel Schumacher ... N
I don't know that much about this film, but I'm glad it's turning the tide of bad X-Men flicks. I'm curious if Fox has a thing that says that if they keep making these, then they get to keep the license. It'd be nice to integrate these guys into the Cinematic Universe. Gaius
That's pretty much exactly what their contract is (same with Sony and Spiderman), which is why we got stuff like the shitty 90's Fantastic Four as well as Wolverine Origins a few years back (more money in the long run if they keep the license). Jackman has expressed interest in a crossover for Wolverine to work in the MCU, but I doubt that'll happen. I'm just glad they've seemingly righted the X-men ship after X3 and Origins, FC was pretty good, this looks solid, and DOFP is ambitious as hell. Russell
I think I liked First Class just a bit more than this movie, but mostly because First Class had the whole '60s setting going for it and Michael Fassbender's amazing performance driving the thing. This is definitely the best X-Men movie in Bryan Singer's continuity, though. I suspect new management at Fox has a lot to do with the decency of this movie. Tom Rothman- the CEO of Fox for the past decade - was fired just last fall, and I think prior to being fired, he was pressured into to taking a more hands off position with Fox's projects. He was one of the execs allegedly responsible for micromanaging X-Men Origins. He was responsible for micromanaging a lot of Fox's movies and taking a giant dump on them. It got so bad, that the only high profile directors that would agree to make movies for Fox were James Cameron and Ridley Scott. So basically, Tom Rothman was the Don Mattrick of Twentieth Century Fox, and now that he's gone, maybe the company will start making better movies. The Wolverine is definitely a good start. Videodrome
I liked FC for Michael Fassbender and also thought Kevin Bacon made a good villain. Also, to some extent I just thought Havok was an interesting character in the comics and it was nice to finally see him on screen. I wish he could be in a regular Main X-men movie as he is Cyclop's brother. It makes Cyclops more interesting when there is sibling rivalry and because they're genetically immune to each other's powers.
Calvus
The problem with most of the superhero movies made for like forever is that the movie creators never realized that what made a great comic were great characters. I, vaguely, remember the comic series that this movie is based upon but I remember that it was the reason that I learned to love the Wolverine. He is a very complex character that has been, until today, been underutilized. I enjoyed everything in this movie but the Silver Samurai. And a certain screw up from the last x-men movie that changed the ultimate relationship that would have developed from this story. X-men fans now of what I speak. I don't always agree with @russell but I can in good conscience endorse this review.
Videodrome
Sometimes I wonder if Rodriguez should do Wolverine almost like Sin City with a hard contrast style but in color.
