Videodrome 27 Report post Posted November 4, 2012 Well timed review. I had seen some previews and was mildly curious about this kung fu movie. No, I wasn't even aware of the RZA Wu-Tang connection. Probably not my kind of kung fu movie. It's ironic that fans of genre styles can make such an abomination of the movie genre they're so passionate about. Sometimes I think musicians should cameo in movies as........musicians. Or if a musician has pull with the movie, it would nearly be like a music video sequence. Seriously there is plenty of opportunity to have dramatic scenes play out around a concert featuring the band that wants screen time.
Russell 0 Report post Posted November 4, 2012 I don't know if it's your kind of Kung Fu, movie or not Videodrome. I think it's a bad movie regardless of what type of movie it's trying to be, however, I think anyone should know in advance that RZA never tried to make an elaborate wu xia film like Hero or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and he wasn't trying to make a realistic martial arts flick like the old Bruce Lee movies. The Shaw Bros movies of the '70s were low budget, campy and fun. If you haven't seen any, just imagine the Pai Mei segments from Kill Bill Volume 2, and that's what most of them are like. Clearly, that's what RZA was trying to do, but he just came up short because he doesn't know how to tell a story yet.
Videodrome 27 Report post Posted November 5, 2012 Yeah I was thinking Pei Mei or anything that has a flying Guillotine or other ridiculous attack. I kind of think Big Trouble In Little China drew some inspiration from that kind of stuff. Most recently the kind of fighting movie I've really enjoyed was Ip Man. He just beat the tar out of that guy at the end. Good stuff.
